Hair loss can occur as:
·    Patchy balding (alopecia areata)
·    Total loss of head hair (alopecia totalis)
·    Total loss of body hair (alopecia universalis)
Although generally associated with men, hair loss also frequently affects women, in particular alopecia areata and alopecia totalis.

Blood deficiency
In general, alopecia (hair loss) is regarded by Chinese doctors as being the result of a deficiency syndrome, in particular a deficiency of blood. A variety of reasons can cause blood deficiency, such as poor diet, aging, stress (worry, anxiety, depression) and the use of drugs. Since Traditional Chinese Medicine defines hair as extensions of blood, a healthy supply of blood is essential for nourished hair follicles. Thus, a deficiency of blood can lead to undernourished follicles and therefore, hair loss.

Hair loss as a cause of blood deficiency is best treated using He Shou Wu.

Qi stagnation
Hair loss can also occur as a result of constrained qi (energy) and blood (particularly in the chest, neck, shoulders, face and head), brought about by stress and emotional constraint. Since a weak qi means that bloodflow is restricted, which may lead to hair loss.

This can be treated with ginseng and chai hu (bupleurem), Xiao Yao.
