Allergies

Seasonal allergies may be caused by fungi, moulds or pollen from plants and symptoms include sneezing, congestion, runny nose and red, itchy eyes. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), allergies are regarded as a ‘Wind’ invading the body, which causes the symptoms to come and go.

Wind
In TCM, wind enters through the upper body and can bring damp (causing a runny nose and congestion) and heat (causing itchy eyes). Wind gets into the body when the person’s wei qi (protective energy) is weak, that is when their immune system is especially vulnerable (a person’s vulnerability to catching diseases are also affected by their wei qi). TCM remedies for allergies are mainly used to dispel wind, drain the damp and cool the heat in the patient, but may also be used to build up their wei qi, depending on the severity of the allergy symptoms.
